The warm weather has arrived and if you are anything like us, you are eather planning your summer vacation or you are already on vacation. Vacation is like letting everything go – even for just a few days.Summer brings more daylight hours and more time to exercise outdoors. But the longer days also bring higher temperatures that can make exercise challenging.
So here are our top tips how to stay fit and healthy during the summer period:
1. Don’t push it
You burn more energy working out in the heat so you may need to adjust the intensity of your workout
2. East when possible
If you aren’t renting a house or cottage, try to book at an extended stay hotel (or at least a room with access to a kitchenette), so you can prep as many meals as possible at “home.” Again, this allows you to control every aspect of what you are eating.
3. Right timing
Work out in the cool of early morning or late afternoon/evening. Avoid the scorching middle of the afternoon.
4. Keep yourself hydrated
It is important to bring water with you when you head out for the day. Staying hydrated will help keep your metabolism humming but it can also prevent you from overeating. Dehydration often masks itself as hunger, leading you to eat when you don’t really need to. Besides, if you are spending your time in a sunny, warm climate, water will help you avoid the vacation ruining side effects of heat exhaustion!
5. Be happy
Try to enjoy all the beauty summer has to offer and don’t stress. Health is a journey and it is all about finding a balance that is right for you. No one is asking you to be perfect and what fun is perfect anyway? Just do what you can, with what you’ve got, wherever you are and be happy doing it. If you are feeling down or overwhelmed, shift your mindset. So many times we look at eating healthy as a chore and this can be so harmful to our mental health. Celebrate your healthy habits instead of looking them at an obligation. Take it one day at a time and take time to remind yourself that you are making decisions that will move you closer to where you want to be. Summer is short and life is good. Soak it up!
